Shauna Harris: My nuçi’s space story
*The following contains frank discussion of suicidal ideation. Please proceed with care, and reach out for support if needed.
My relationship with Nuçi’s Space began in 2001, when I was 22 years old. It was the middle of the night, and I was terrified that I was going to end my life. I remembered a napkin with a phone number a friend had given me—a number to call if I ever needed help.
I called, never expecting anyone to answer at that hour, and left a shaky voicemail.
A few minutes later, my phone rang. It was Linda Phillips.
She spoke to me with such kindness, compassion, and love that I have never forgotten it. She stayed on the phone with me until she felt certain I would be safe through the night. The very next day, she met with me and connected me with both a psychiatrist and a therapist.
That moment saved my life.
Over the past two decades, there have been other dark seasons when I needed life-saving support again, and every time, Nuçi’s Space has been there for me.
I sleep better at night knowing that the umbrella of Nuçi’s care covers me and keeps me safe. Because of that support, I have gone on to build a life filled with fulfillment, joy, and meaning.
Most importantly, I know that whenever mental health struggles arise, I have somewhere to turn.
I have a place to call home.
