Music Summer Camp In Athens Planned for Area Middle and High School Students

Dear Teachers & Educators,

First, please accept my apology for sending you an unsolicited, mass email to your school account. Unfortunately we are trying to get in touch with as many students, parents and teachers as possible in a very short amount of time.

As some of you may know, Nuçi’s Space is a small non profit organization in Athens, GA that serves as a support and resource center to the music and arts community. It was founded in memory of 22-year old musician and UGA student Nuçi Phillips who took his own life in 1996 after battling major depression.

The aim of the organization is to prevent suicide by providing obstacle free treatment for musicians suffering from depression and other such disorders as well as to assist in the emotional, physical and professional well-being of musicians. For more information about Nuçi’s Space please visit www.nuci.org.

From the Athens Banner-Herald
Nuçi’s Space is launching its first music-based summer camp this year. The working name of the program is “Camp Amped” and organizer Bob Sleppy says that the idea for the camp has been bandied about for about four-and-a-half years but only recently seemed viable. While the exact dates are yet to be announced, the camp should run for approximately two weeks in early-to-mid summer.

“We have a small group including high school students, college students, parents and staff planning this program together," says Sleppy. "Our first step is to pass out surveys in high schools and middle schools and also make them available on the web.” Nuçi’s Space will use this information to determine which type of activities it will feature.

He continues, “We plan to offer classes that focus on areas of interest from instrument and ensemble lessons, songwriting, studio recording, road-teching, promotion, music business overview, spinning/ scratching records, building beats and rap lyric composition. Our plan is to hire local musicians as teachers for the classes as well as have special guest speakers. In addition to making the camp affordable, we hope to offer a few financial scholarships.”

Nuçi’s Space will also be seeking charitable contributions and working out scholarship possibilities in order to make the program available to deserving kids who could otherwise not afford to participate.

We need your help to tell students and parents about our plans for the camp, encourage them to visit our Web site (www.nuci.org) and fill out the online survey.

Once we have a collection of completed surveys we will begin to solidify dates, select courses and finalize financial information. We are currently finishing up an informational flyer and will gladly send one to you if requested.

Our goal is to provide area students with a fun, unique and one-of-a-kind experience this summer vacation. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, suggestions or concerns. Thank for in advance for your help in sharing this information.

Sincerely

Bob Sleppy
