Flagpole Magazine‘s band “McCommunists” took the top spot in the 2011 Athens Business Rocks last Saturday, February 19th. The other two finalists were “The One Hitters” a band from VOLO and “80 lb. Cougar” from Bel-Jean Copy/Print.

The scoring was based on three categories: fundraising (which included fans of the band “voting” for their favorites by donating to Nuçi’s Space), judges scores and crowd response.

After three opening rounds, the three finalists are The McCommunists (Flagpole), 80# Cougar (Bel-Jean) and The One Hitters (Volo). They will be battling it out this Saturday, February 19^th at the Fabulous 40 Watt Club. In addition to the three finalists, we asked a few of the “Judge’s Favorite” and “Crowd Favorite” winners to give us an encore performance. The schedule for this Saturday is the following…

NOVEMBER 8, 2010 –

The Georgia Supreme court, in a 4-3 decision, has ruled that Nuçi’s Space is exempt from paying property taxes.

The Georgia Center for Nonprofits has a detailed breakdown of the decision and what led up to it.

The Athens Music Collective is playing three shows this season towards the goal of raising enough money to sponsor two young people for a session of the 2011 Camp Amped summer program.

Luke and Sam (Emergent Heart)

Emergent Heart is the result of years of work and collaboration from a music collective that includes musicians from Athens, Ga and Washington D.C. – headed up by drummer/producer Luke Johnson. It’s free to download a copy of the group’s first EP “One” but they are encouraging that donations are being made to Nuçi’s Space instead.

The album features guest spots from Johnson, Kai Reidl (Macha), Graham Ulciny (Reptar), Suny Lyons (Hope For agoldensummer), Neil Newcomb and Andrew Black.
